It’s hard to quantify the outpouring of support for the former Ginebra cager Rudy Distrito, who is now serving his jain sentence in a Nevada prison for killing the paramour of his former wife.
For a man like Distrito, who had played the hardcourts for almost three decades, the impulse of pride had perhaps sparked the urge to react swiftly, especially at that time when his manhood was insulted. But past is past. What we can do perhaps to help is important while Rudy is serving his sentence in an American prison.
And it is heartwarming to read from Rina Jiminez David’s column that Distrito is just doing great despite his incarceration in a foreign jail, which is must better than the congested jails in the Philippines in so far as health and safety standards are concerned. Although the disparity may not be comparable at all knowing the economic gap between the two countries.
At least, Distrito is finding time to make full use of his playing skills in prison, the best way to fight off boredom. After all the game of basketball bridges friendship and understanding. In other instances, it can also create the worst of enemies considering it’s a physical game. It’s a sport that can teste the player’s patience and agility in the hardcourt.
Quite interesting to know that the Filipino cager finds time to record his observations and experiences inside the jail. As a good suggestion, perhaps, it is only fitting that Distrito can write about his life in the American prison. Isn’t it a good non-fiction book whose captive market is the Filipino communities in America. Unmistikably, it could generate enough support when probably launch in the international markets, knowing the hundreds of thousands of Filipino-Americans now scattered all over the U.S. They may find it easy to buy the book when it is done. This is on top of the dole outs from sympathetic Fil-Ams who may consider it a great indulgence on their part if they can part with a small assistance for Rudy Distrito and other Pinoys who are now in various jails in America and elsewhere.
As the saying goes: "In unity, there is strength." Who else will help the Filipinos than the Filipinos themselves. Mabuhay!
