Various Studies indicate that lack or inadequate sleep can produce different harmful effects on body’s immune systems to fight diseases. Here are some of the researched findings:
1. Resistance to Insulin: Insulin helps the transportation of glucose in the body. People with inadequate or irregular sleep have difficulty in the metabolism of sugar in their body which may lead to type 2 diabetes.
2. Feeling Stressed All the Time: Inadequate sleep is found to increase the level of cortisone during the afternoon or evening;this results in an increase in the heart rate, blood pressure and glucose; the consequence is hypertension and heart disease.
3.Weakening of the Body Immune System: A prolonged sleep deprivation, say, for more than ten days, results in secretion of higher levels of C-reactive protein which is related to heart diseases and malfunctions in the body. The disease fighting antibodies are lesser in people suffering from inadequate sleep vis-a-vis their counterparts who get adequate sleep. As a result, they are more prone to viral attacks.
4.Craving for Junk Food; Two consecutive days of inadequate sleep is enough for the body to produce higher levels of hunger inducing harmone ghrelin and less of the appetite suppressing harmone leptin. When one sleeps less, the body demands more calories which in turn results in obesity.
