Leh (Ladakh), September 02 (Vijay Kumar) – “Areas like Ladakh and Kargil are ideally feasible to harness solar and wind energy to generate electricity”, JK Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said and added that the numerous water bodies in the State are rich source for launching mini and micro hydel projects.
Mr. Omar was speaking after he and Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy (NRE), Dr. Farooq Abdullah jointly inaugurated 30 KV micro hydel project at Udmaroo in Nobra area of Ladakh district constructed by MNRE. Omar said that State government will take the advantage of the support provided by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) for utilizing the non-conventional sources of energy available here to generate electricity.

Omar said that the development of remote and far-flung areas like Nobra is on the top of the development agenda of his government. “We are putting in place every effort to give fillip to the development activities in the far-flung areas and upgrade the basic amenities”, he added. He said attention is being concentrated to link up unconnected areas with main roads and provide better health cover to the people living in these areas. He said a number of schemes for the upliftment of backward and remote areas have been launched under the State and the Centre sectors. “The generation of power energy in these areas utilizing available sources is receiving added attention so that people could get benefit from the projecs launched in their area”, Omar said.

The Union Minister also presided over a workshop on ‘solar energy action plan for Ladakh region’ organized by Union MNRE were Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah also participated as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Farooq Abdullah expressed the hope that the workshop would prove fruitful for evolving a comprehensive plan to develop non-conventional sources of energy in the State especially in Ladakh region.
The Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Leh, Chering Dorje welcomed the Union Minister and the Chief Minister and recalled the long association of Dr. Farooq with the people of Ladakh. He said that the people of the area have greater expectations from the Union Minister and the Chief Minister for the large scale development of Ladakh region.
The MLA, Nobra,. Tsentan Namgyal, Chief Secretary, S. S. Kapur, Executive Councilors, Tsering Angchuk and Mohammad Khan, and senior officers of MNRE were present on the occasion among others.
The Chief Minister and Union Minister also visited Turtuk village and interact with people there. Omar received various deputations and talked to scores of people who brought to his notice various demands for development schemes.
Omar also took stock of the development works under execution in the Area under different sectors and directed the concerned to ensure timely completion of the schemes.
