Lighter shades of winter

It’s time to bid farewell to the lazy days of summer, but there are already hints of fall in the air and in the stores. It is time to get your cool weather wardrobe out and ready to go, but make sure that your makeup is ready to go the distance this season as well. So, what will be the new wintry look? Is black and navy blue the only colours for us? Is the nude makeup still in? Don’t panic! No matter what the season is, you just have to be chic and stylish.

The cold weather doesn’t restrict you with colours and styles but in fact open new avenues for experimentation. You can use all type of cosmetics ranging from natural to the deeper shades without being tawdry. There are occasions where you can walk in with an interesting collage of formal and casual wear, with appropriately done makeup and catch everyone’s eye. You just have to think out of the box and be more adaptive towards fashion and colours.

Talking about the selection of your cosmetics, it depends upon your skin type and colour. Finding the right colours for your skin tones can be challenging since some colours that seem great on certain people can look dark and dramatic on you. The cold weather is all about dry skin and you would intend to have it dewy. To have that glow on your skin, use an illuminating moisturiser under your foundation.

When it comes to the right dress, practicality and usage are the key points to be kept in mind. Nadia Lakdawala deals with the designs and colours which are easy to carry and are soothing to the eye. "I am more into dresses which are for multi purpose usage. You can wear the same dress for lunch and for travelling somewhere too. It’s better to spend money on something you will wear more often as compared to the heavy stuff you save for the weddings," says Nadia.

For her, no fashion is ‘out’ – it just depends upon the function and the way you have used embellishments. Gota, motifs, sequins, kat dana and diamonds are still used but it’s the amount and design which makes it decent.

As far as the fabrics are concerned she likes to experiment with them and prefers pure fabrics. "I am concentrating on getting my fabrics from abroad and that’s why I have started travelling a lot. There are so many unusual fabrics in the international arena and the fun part is to fuse them with our local material. For formals, chiffon and raw silk are preferred while cottons and chickens are good for casual wear. But, whatever you wear, the fabric has to be pure," shares Nadia.

The cool weather has its own fabrics and materials. There is a range of thick raw silks and georgettes which could be embroidered or designed according to your needs. And if you have to attend outdoor parties, you can easily carry your clothes elegantly, without getting the chills. You can even merge it with other fabrics, as a little mix and match can make the dress chic and different.

The general conscience is that only dark colours should be used in winters but that’s not completely true. If black is the colour of winter then white looks chic. Remember, we called last year’s winter as white winter, because it no more restricted you from trying out different colours.

Her new pret collection has a mixture of unusual shades too. "This season the focus is on purples, pinks, greens and uncommon shades of blues along with smoky grey and black. I have even blended beige with charcoal grey and feroza motifs. The idea is to be adaptive and go for different colours ranging from subdued to brighter hues so that there is something for everyone out there," expresses Nadia.

When playing with colours the horizon for makeup broadens too. A popular look for the winters is the classic, 1940’s femme fatale of red lips, bold eyebrows, black eyeliner and long, swept lashes. If you choose the deeper shade for your attire, you can go bold with your makeup as well. Darker shades are in vogue and girls prefer to use reds and maroons instead of light pink. And, thanks to the weather, it doesn’t look too bold to be handled. You can even go for smoky eyes by using matte black, grey, navy or plum while matte eye shadow is suggested for those who never cared for shimmery eye shadows. Plums, taupe and even black and grey are now available in bold, dramatic pigmentation which can also double as eye liner if used with a damp eye liner brush. The lashes are well defined – a trend that translates year round but for winter, lashes are long, fluttery and dense black.

It’s just not about following a trend of simple colour palettes that give a complete look but it’s the fusion and combinations that stands you apart from the rest. Unusual combos in fabric and atypical colour blends are the part of both your dress and makeup. But, the bottom line is to be stylishly yourself.
