Recently, the administration of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe had started cracking down on aid groups in the country. Mugabe accuses them of secretly aiding the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and its leader Morgan Tsvangirai. Zimbabwe has been plagued by violence ever since the elections. Tsvangirai had won the elections; but, he did not have enough votes to avoid a runoff election. The runoff election is set for June 27.
However, Mugabe’s administration has been accused of using fear, violence, and intimidation to garner support for him. Mugabe has blamed the MDC for the violence. But the United Nations and human rights groups blame Mugabe’s Zanu-PF Party for most of the violence that plagues the country.
Mugabe brushed off all accusations and said that Tsvangirai was nothing but a Western puppet.
The government had recently detained embassy workers from the United States and Britain. These workers were checking on the victims of the political violence. However, it is unknown if they are still detained at the moment.
Now, a possible new revelation has turned up.
Recently, journalists have been told by a Western diplomat that leadership is shifting. The diplomat said that Mugabe remained in power because of the agency known as Joint Operations Command (JOC). While the organization is controlled by a politician, it is run by General Constantine Chiwenga. Chiwenga is the head of the country’s military.
The diplomat has said that Mugabe has given control of the country to Chiwenga. Tsvangirai has blamed the military of forcing Zimbabweans to vote for Mugabe. Chiwenga and his wife are too subject to travel sanctions by the United States and Europe.
It is also said that Chiwenga and his wife are pretty brutal and vicious.
If Mugabe did turn over control to Chiwenga, the situation in Zimbabwe could be similar to Burma. Should that be the case, Morgan Tsvangirai could be Zimbabwe’s Aung San Suu Kyi.
