Listening, Really Listening To God Is Important

Almighty God is always ready willing and able to speak with us no matter what we approach Him with. As any teacher, any pastor, any employer, anyone in authority will tell you there is absolutely no such thing as a "Stupid Question" and for every question there is an answer.

Our daily journey through life as a child of God is filled with questions, God has the answer to any question we might ask of Him, if only we will ask it. JEREMIAH: 33: 3; "Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee the great and mighty things which thou knowest not." This is reinforced by Jesus in MATTHEW: 7: 7-8 "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened."

To be able to hear what God has to say to us or see that which he needs us to see though we must first be in a proper frame of mind and receptive to what He has to say, or show us, to be patient and quiet. To do this we are instructed in the Bible in PSALMS: 46:10 "Be still and know that I am God." Also PSALM: 40: 1-2; "I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of the horrible pit, out of the miry clay and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings."

Take for instance, God’s announcement that the time for rest and sleep and re-juvination, is over as the flowers of spring begin to sprout through the ground, or you see the first robin, or a flock of Canada Geese heading north instead of south. God is announcing "It is SPRING! Or in late October when the leaves of the trees begin to chang color and fall to the ground, and you see flocks of geese heading south instead of north, God’s announcing its time for nature to enter into a resting stage, its time for Autumn. Or you awaken in the morning, your room feels chilly and when you look outside, everything is blanketed in a blanket of pristine snow, God is announcing winter.

Almighty God speaks to us, to our spirit, through The Holy Spirit sent to us by God our Father as our teacher and our provider. Holy Spirit speaks to us through different ways, through scripture, through circumstances, through prayer, through song, and through other people, and if we are attentively listening, we will hear God, and after a while, it will almost become second nature, so that even in the middle of something important, we will hear the call, and respond to it.

Our Heavenly Father through His Holy Spirit has several ways to get our attention, especially if we are pre-occupied with other events, happening in our lives. Agitating us making us restless is one of the easier ones. You might suddenly experience an unexplained restlessness, something trying to gain your attention, trying to stir me to alter my path, and take me in a different direction.

The spoken word is another effective way, using someone else to verbalize His message for us. In 1 SAMUEL: 3: Three times Almighty God calls out to Samuel as he slept, each time, Samuel would arise and run to Eli, thinking it was his master calling him, finally Eli, realizing that it was God calling Samuel, told the boy to go back and sleep and if called again, simply say "Speak; for thy servant heareth, and then God told Samuel what was to be.

Many times throughout our journey with God through our lives, God will grant us blessings, His way of showing us we have His favor and that we have pleased Him. It might be with a new baby, or a new job, or an unexpected raise in pay or bonus. We may finally find that special home we’ve been looking and looking for, or that special person who will become our life-mate. God has blessed us. We must make certain though that we do not let such blessings turn our attention away from God by diminishing our need for God and our dependency on Him with un-needed self praise, false pride, and arrogance.

There will be times in our journey with God, where we will ask something of Him, something God knows is not right, BUT still we ask and ask, wondering if God is ever going to answer and grant our prayer, like in II SAMUEL: 12: 16-18; where David pleads and fasts seven days begging God to save the life of a child. God’s answer was "NO!" This is an answer nobody likes or wants to hear from God, but there are times when His answer has to be "NO".

God is not beyond using extraordinary circumstances to get our attention so that we will listen to what he has to say to us, for instance in EXODUS: 3: 1; God seizes Moses attention with a bush that was on fire but not consumed, and the Lord spoke to Moses from the flame. God is everywhere and His presence can be seen within every circumstance of life, but are we aware of his prescence, and is there something special he wishes to tell us about.

Our defeats, our setbacks in life, could be because God needed our attention about something important, but we were so absorbed in what was going on we failed to pay attention to God’s warnings, and arrogantly end up in disaster.

Tragedy, sickness and affliction is yet another way for God to try to communicate with us if only we will listen, as in the case of my sister Brenda, who through no fault of her own was being medicated by various doctors for many many years for physical as well as emotional problems. Eventually the various medications became counter-productive and began attacking her body, until finally the medical profession threw its hands in the air unable to do anything for her, as a matter of fact the medications were doing more harm than good as it was destroying her major organs and she was dying. She ended up taking her own life out of desperation.
