Little Green Footballs (LGF) is a blog run by California Web designer Charles Johnson. Today, Little Green Footballs broke a story regarding photos of this week’s missile launches released by the Iranian government. Johnson figured out that the images were altered and phony.
Johnson and Little Green Footballs has a history of breaking news about photoshopped images and documents. For example, in 2004, the blogger helped uncover the forged Killian Documents, a scandal that led to the resignation of CBS News’ Dan Rather.
In this week’s findings, Johnson noticed that the smoke trails of some of the missiles Iran claimed to have fired are identical. This phenomenon is impossible and the wire service that initially published the photo, AFP, has printed a retraction. The photo in question can be seen on the right side of this Web page.
