The Liverpool Streets Ahead Weekend
The Liverpool Streets Ahead Weekend takes place between 24th – 26th May around St George’s Hall and in the City Centre. According to the organizers “There will be shows on every corner, roaming acts along the streets, surprises in the squares and shop windows, and performers hanging 60 feet above your head”. The best of European street arts of the past decade are also going to be showcased and the culmination will occur on Whit Monday evening when the festival is handed over to the people to decide what happens.
Gustav Klimt
The Gustav Klimt: Painting, Design and Modern Life in Vienna 1900 exhibition is between 30th May – 31st August at the Tate in the St George’s Dock. This is the first comprehensive exhibition of Gustav Klimt’s work ever staged in the UK. The exhibition will include over 100 decorative, ornamental works and focuses on the life and art of one of the world’s most influential and revered artists. The show will explore Klimt’s role as the founder and leader of the Viennese Secession, a progressive group of artists and artisans. Major paintings and drawings from all stages of Klimts career will be shown alongside the work of Josef Hoffmann, the architect and designer, who was a close friend of the artist.
The Liverpool Sound
The Liverpool Sound will be a multi-artist concert in front over 35,000 people at Anfield on Sunday 1 June. The concert will be headlined by Sir Paul McCartney and his band and will also feature, live on stage, global superstars of popular music. This celebration of Liverpool will be broadcast live to the worldwide audience.
The Big Hope
The Big Hope between 4th – 11th June is a Congress for young people from 18 to 35 years of age from the UK, all the countries of Europe, and the rest of the world. The attendees have been nominated for their leadership and faith qualities because an aim of the congress is to bring together future leaders who will remain in contact for the rest of their lives. The congress will start at the Anglican Cathedral and end at the Catholic Cathedral and will have Keynote Addresses by such renowned speakers as Stephen Green, Group Chairman HSBC, John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, and Cormac Murphy O’Connor, Archbishop of Westminster.
The Design Show – Liverpool
The Design Show Liverpool will be held between 19th – 22nd June in the crypt of the Metropolitan Cathedral and will showcase the very best of product design, cutting-edge technology, and stylish living. The public will be able to buy from over 150 selected designers, who represent the best in regional, national and international design. Their products range from furniture, glass, and lighting to garden products, clothing, and jewellery.
Pipilotti Rist
One of Europe’s leading contemporary artists, Pipilotti Rist from Switzerland, presents a major UK solo exhibition at the Foundation for Art & Creative Technology (FACT) between 27th June and 31st August. Famed for her stunning sculptural video installations that are often presented in unusual locations, the exhibition will traverse the natural to the industrial world.
War Requiem
Britten’s War Requiem, one of the 20th century’s greatest choral works, is being performed in the Anglican Cathedral on the 28th June, in a production commissioned by the Liverpool Culture Company. This performance is by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir, the Choir of Liverpool Cathedral, the Choir of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Choir of Cologne Cathedral.
African Oyé
Africa Oyé – the UK’s largest free African music festival – returns to Sefton Park this June. Running all day on Saturday 16th June and Sunday 17th June, this family-friendly celebration of cultural diversity has become an annual tradition in Liverpool’s social calendar.
