Anantnag (Kashmir), April 26 –Anantnag Parliamentary Constituency set to go to polls on April 30, 2009 has a total electorate of 11,65,951 which is the highest among the four Parliamentary Constituencies of Kashmir division. The total voters also include 377 service electors. Out of the total registered voters 6,11,958 are male and 5,53,993 female who will exercise their franchise in the Lok Sabha Elections 2009.
As many as, 1485 polling stations spread across 16 segments of Anantnag Lok Sabha seat have been set up to facilitate voters. These include 1257 main and 228 auxiliary polling stations.
In all, 13 candidates are in the fray for the said Parliamentary Constituency. These include Peer Mohammad Hussain (PDP), Mohammad Sidiq Khan (BJP), Mirza Mehboob Beig (NC), Nisar Ahmad Khan (BSP), Asif Jeelani (AIFB), Bashir Ahmad Khan (RSNP), Bashir Ahmad Malik (ANC), Fayaz Ahmad Bhat (SP), Mushtaq Ahmad Ganai (IJP), Mohammad Rafiq Wani (LJSP), Rajiv Mahajan (Independent), Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Shah (Independent) and Nasir Ahmad Bhat (Independent).
Mr. Rajendar Prashad Mandal bearing contact No. 9906155488 and 01932-228194 is the Election Observer for Anantnag district, Mr. Prabhat Kumar Mishra having mobile No. 9906154635 and 228195 is the Election Observer for Kulgam district while Mr. Rakesh Sarwal bearing contact No. 9906155148 and 01931-228191 is the Election Observer for Pulwama and Shopian districts.
In 1967 elections, Anantnag Parliamentary constituency was represented by Congress candidate Mr. Mohammad Shafi Qureshi while as in 1971 midterm polls, the constituency was again represented by Mr. Qureshi, this time, however, on NC ticket. In 1977 Lok Sabha elections, the seat was yet again won by Mr. Qureshi on INC ticket. In the midterm 1980 Parliamentary elections, the seat was won by Mr. Ghulam Rasool Kochak of NC while as in 1984, the seat was won by Begum Akbar Jahan of NC. In 1989 General Election, Anantnag Lok Sabha seat was won by Mr. P.L. Handoo of NC while as in 1996, the seat went to Mr. M.M. Dar on JD ticket. In 1998, the seat was won by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on INC ticket while as in 1999, the constituency was represented by Mr. Ali Mohammad Naik of NC.
