Lord Christopher Monkton Shakes Up Global Warming Debate

An article in the July 2008 newsletter of the American Physical Society, Physics & Society, by Lord Christopher Monkton, the science advisor to Britain’s Margaret Thatcher administration, challenges assertions made by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the IPCC, that human-made greenhouse gasses are the main cause of global warming.

Lord Monkton says that the IPCC’s modeling overstated and exaggerated the effects that human-made greenhouse gasses have had on global temperature. Monkton believes that natural variability is more responsible for changing surface temperatures than a human-made cause.

Additionally, Lord Monkton publicized the lack of detail and transparency in the IPCC’s 2001 and 2007 reports on global warming. "When I began to investigate," Monkton said, "it seemed that the IPCC was deliberately concealing and obscuring its method."

As a preface to the article, Physics & Society included a disclaimer saying, "The following article has not undergone any scientific peer review, since that is not normal procedure for American Physical Society newsletters. The American Physical Society reaffirms the following position on climate change, adopted by its governing body, the APS Council, on November 18, 2007: “Emissions of
greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the atmosphere in ways that affect the Earth’s climate.”

The American Physical Society represents over 50,000 scientists. More information and a free download of the July 2008 newsletter are available at www.aps.org.
