Louis Kraml’s Medical News Review – March 2013

1. When people have a positive perspective on aging, recovery is much better, says a new research that has been conducted in the U.S. On the other hand, people that have a negative perspective get well much harder and over a longer period of time.

The question that arises is if positive thinking has indeed the power to get older people well a lot faster. The study was conducted by Yale School of Public Health and it is the first one on this theme.

The leader of the team is an epidemiologist and psychologist, and she has declared that the view that older people have on the aging process has an impact on how they end up living that period of life.

During the study, two groups of senior citizens were compared: people with a negative perspective on aging, and people with a positive perspective. The study was conducted over a period of ten years and the persons involved were interviewed every 18 months.

The result of the study has proved that persons with a positive perspective on aging were 40 percent more likely to recover completely even from severe health issues.

2. As many people suffer from cat allergies, several studies have been conducted over the years in order to help them. The McMaster researchers started a study two years ago, giving a dose from a new cat allergy treatment to a group of people every 6 months. The people that were treated showed fewer signs of cat allergy, demonstrating the efficiency of the treatment. The study is still going on.

3. Autism is now easier to identify in newborn babies. When a baby is born underweight and has a particular brain structure, the risk of autism is greater, says a new study. Due to this, the doctors might be informed quicker and thus help and therapy could start earlier.

Specialists say that through ultrasound scanning, they are now able to detect larger ventricles, cavities in the brain where the spinal fluid is kept. For many years doctors have wondered what causes this terrible disease in kids. Vaccines and environmental factors were thought to be responsible for autism, and doctors tried to understand at what age kids start to show early symptoms of autism.

When the baby has this ventricular enlargement in the brain, it is usually correlated with a lack of brain tissue, called white matter.

4. If a child does not grow as fast as the others of the same age, parents should not worry. A new study at the University of Bristol has showed that parents should not panic thinking of the height of their kids, as most kids will catch up during their teen years. When kids reach the age of 13, they compensate the gap in height and weight most of the time.

5. There is no more doubt; the Mediterranean diet is responsible for reducing heart attacks and strokes. The study has been conducted in Spain and it has concluded that olive oil and nuts are extremely beneficial to the human body, reducing the incidence of the major cardiovascular events.

People that follow this diet eat olive oil, fruits, nuts, vegetables, cereals, moderate intake of fish and poultry and low quantities of processed meats, dairy foods and sweets.
