LREDA-LAHDC conferred UNDP GEF’s Award,2013

, Arif Kakpori, Sr. Project Engineer, LREDA received the award from the Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr. Farooq Abdullah.

Leh, December 20, (Scoop News)- The National Workshop on Solar Thermal Systems organized by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Global Environment Fund (GEF), the Ladakh Renewable Energy Development Agency (LREDA)-LAHDC, Leh was conferred the award for securing first position in capacity addition of solar water heating systems during the year 2013. The award function was held at the Ashok Hotel and awardees included state nodal agencies of MNRE, entrepreneurs in the solar thermal sector and manufacturers. On behalf of LREDA, Arif Kakpori, Sr. Project Engineer, LREDA received the award from the Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr. Farooq Abdullah. LREDA was represented by Arif Kakpori and Reuben Gergan, Sr. Project Engineers of LREDA at the occasion.

India was ranked 4th in the world for new capacity addition in 2011 with a total installed capacity of 7.37 million sqm metres equivalent to 5144 MWth . Achievement in capacity addition in the year 2012-13 was 1.4 million sqm equivalents to 980 MWth. The growth is largely supported by India’s own ambitious mission to promote the use of solar energy under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM). The target set under JNNSM by the year 2022 is 20 million sqm of solar thermal collector area.

LREDA has played an important role in the addition of solar thermal capacity in the nation, especially in the cold-climate regions of India with a sizeable increase in the utilization of solar thermal applications. Over 12,000 sqm of solar water heating systems, installation of 2500 domestic greenhouses and 250 commercial greenhouses, distribution of over 1500 solar dish cooking systems and the utilization of concentrated solar thermal applications for community cooking has benefited Leh District since 2010. Given the extreme climatic conditions of the Ladakh region, with water and space heating a constraint during the long winter months, the installation of solar thermal applications by LREDA has largely benefited the entire Leh district. Under the leadership of Project Director of LREDA, Jigmet Takpa, LREDA has been executing the Ladakh Renewable Energy Initiative project and is deemed to be the largest off-grid renewable energy project in the world. Takpa foresees further solar thermal capacity addition in the next year for various residential and community applications such as process heating, drying, space heating and refrigeration. LREDA has also carried out a large number of projects in rural electrification with installation of over 125 off-grid solar photovoltaic power plants where villages, health, education and religious institutions have been directly benefited. Construction of 11 micro and mini hydro projects are also under execution by LREDA in the Nubra and Durbuk Blocks of Leh District.
