Italian Cultural Institute of New York, from June 5th up to July 3rd, 40 photos exhibition from the book New York, Born back into the Past, published by Alinari Sole24ore, texts by Geminello Alvi and Gianni Riotta. The photos are part of Stefano and Silvia Lucchini’s collection. An act of love for New York City.
Born back into the Past was born to be a book, but it naturally became a beautiful exhibition. Forty photographs selected from the book will be exposed for a month at the Italian Cultural Institute in New York. “The photos are part of a collection Stefano and I purchased at an auction a few years ago” keeps explaining Silvia Lucchini. “The very magic within is that the author is unknown. May be this is even adding something to the exhibition, as it shows a really eternal New York City, just caught by someone who was so deeply into the mood of the city”.
“New York is a city you must behold not only with your eyes but also with your heart”, says Stefano Lucchini, in the book overture. “The idea for this book got its spark two years ago when I bought a curious photo album. The film in it is steeped in allure, fleeting snapshots of a New York that never sleeps, from the southern tip of Manhattan north past Central Park”.
“This collection does not only offer splendid photos of New York – continues Geminello Alvi – in the dense years of wartime, it describes a rowing pastwards of the soul who took them and composed them into a succession that leaves no room for doubt”.
“So let us look – explains Gianni Riotta – enthralled and admiring, at these black and white photos: for it is we who, alongside our ancestors, are rushing through that city, yesterday as today”.
The images tell a story about a visually astonishing walk from the south to the north of Manhattan in 1942, you can foresee the Second World War approaching. New York Born back into the Past is an act of love for the city that never sleeps: 103 unreleased photographs from the collection of Stephen and Silvia Lucchini, with texts by Geminello Alvi and Gianni Riotta, published by Alinari Sole24ore.
