‘Magic 60’ Unlikely To Happen, Says Democratic Sen. Schumer of NY

In preparation towards US Election Day 2008 on November 4, the Democrats are bracing themselves for a major victory in the US Congress. At the same time, the Republicans are bracing themselves for a major loss in the US Congress. In regards to the US Senate races, the Democrats are aiming for the “Magic 60.”

Should the Democrats get the Magic 60, they would get a much stronger majority in the US Senate. While the Democrats scored victories back in 2006, those victories were marginal at best.

However, Democratic Senator Charles Schumer of New York says while it is possible, it is highly likely that it will not happen. Schumer explains the difficulty to reach the Magic 60.

Schumer explained on CBS’ “Face the Nation” the possibility. He said: “It’s possible, but unlikely. And the reason is because the terrain is so tough.”

But, he did give the implication that the Democrats will score big in the Senate.

“With 56, 57, 58 (Senate seats), we’ll be able to get a lot done in the Senate and help change the country,” Schumer adds. If they do not get the Magic 60, there is still the ability to pick up support from some of the moderate members of the GOP.

However, it is expected that Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana might lose her seat on November 4.

While the goal is to get the Magic 60, Schumer says that it is unlikely going to happen. But, he does expect Democrats to win more Senate seats come Election Day.
