In a bid to contain the spread of dengue in the big cities, the Maharashtra government has ordered to carry out checks on the migrant workers. Special check up will be carried of the laborers in the construction industry who live in shanties and are generally deprived of the basic amenities.
Suresh Shetty, Minister for Health in the Maharashtra government, instructed the officials in the meeting held recently in Mumbai, the capital city of the state. The meeting was convened after a spate of cases in major cities including Mumbai. Shetty instructed the officials to conduct workshops for private doctors so that they can inform the administration about the cases. It was also decided in the meeting to convene a meeting of health officers of Bombay Municipal Corporation on October 5 with Additional Health Secretary.
“The migrant laborers reside in large number in Mumbai as well as other big cities. The contractors employing these laborers should be entrusted to provide health cards to the laborers and conduct their regular check ups. Special doctors should be appointed in places where more than 100 laborers reside and they should be regularly checked. The health officers of BMC should visit the construction sites where large scale construction is going on,” Shetty said.
Maharashtra has been infected with the cases of dengue. Just within last month, there was one death in Malegaon and five cases in Solapur of this disease. Besides, 33 patients of dengue were admitted in hospital in Mumbai in the first week of September.
