Major hospital buildings in Kashmir unprotected from fire: Tarigami

Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, CPI (M) State Secretary & MLA

Srinagar, December 14, (Scoop News)- Expressing serious concern over the safety of government buildings especially those housing healthcare infrastructure, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, CPI (M) State Secretary has asked the government to take concrete steps to make these buildings fireproof.

“The recent fire incident at Lal Ded maternity hospital followed by today’s fire incident at Barzulla bone and joints hospital reflects a pattern and there is a general perception that our hospital buildings are not safe for the patients, staff and the attendants,” the CPI (M) leader said, in a statement issued here today.

However, he added that it is a matter of satisfaction that in both the incidents, there was no causality of human lives or a major damage to the hospital properties. “So far there is no causalities but sometimes these incidents can prove catastrophic if left unattended. Incidents like these does not only warrant an official inquiry to know the cause of fire but should also act as an eye opener for the government to take immediate steps to make the hospital buildings fireproof,” Tarigami demanded.

He said there is an urgency to install internal fire safety mechanisms in all the hospital buildings which don’t have any such facility so far. Similarly, the age old electric wiring in these hospitals needs to be replaced besides the measures be taken immediately to rectify the loopholes.
