Mark McGwire Admits To Steroid Use
01-11-2010
Mark Mcgwire finally came clean and admitted today in a statement to the Associated Press that he did indeed use steroids during his playing career with the St. Louis Cardinals.
He admitted using steroids off and on during a ten year period which included 1998 when he broke baseball’s home run record.
In his statement and later telephone interview Big Mac said he was sorry he ever did them and the reason he did was to improve his health and not for strength.
McGwire is the second major star within the past year to admit steroid use, Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees did so also. Now the remaining major stars who have not admitted to anything are Barry Bonds,Roger Clemens,Sammy Sosa and David Ortiz..
McGwire’s steroid related public problems started in 2005 when he was called before Congress and refused to answer questions pertaining to steroid use. This was done on his lawyers advice. He said today that those were the worse 48 hours of his life.
St. Louis manager Tony La Russa and baseball commissioner Bud Selig said they were both happy that McGwire has finally faced the truth and is sorry for his actions.
McGwire also said today that he was happy to see baseball being cleaned up, and one can only guess that in 1989 when he started using steroids, had he not, what kind of player he would have been and would he have broken that record in 1998? Would he have hit 70 or just the 40 or so he was probably capable of? Just 40 or so….not bad by anyone’s standards.
