Baramulla/Srinagar, November 02(Scoop News)- Deputy Commissioner Baramulla G A. Khawaja inaugurated one day sensitization programme on Tobacco Control Laws and Measures and District Level Inter School Seminar on hazards of Smoking at Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School Baramulla organised by J&KVHA in collaboration with the Chief Education Officer Baramulla. A sizeable gathering of Principals, Zonal Education Officers, Head Masters, Food Safety Officers and other Enforcement officers besides more than 200 members of civil society, health providers, civil defence volunteers and students participated in the programme.Syed Abdul Raouf CEO Baramulla was also present on the occasion. Dr. Abdul Majid Professor and HOD Community Medicines, SKIMS made a power point presentation highlighting ill effects of smoking and use of Tobacco products. Shabir Ahmad Lone Food Safety Officer sensitized the audience on Tobacco Control Laws and Measures.
A. K. Wani Senior Manager of JKVHA presented welcome address and informed that smoking of tobacco products has become an epidemic in urban and rural areas which is a menace in Kashmir valley. He also said that global adult survey has shown that there are 67% passive smokers in J&K which is the highest percentage in the whole country and calls for concerted action against smoking. On the side lines of the function A.M. Mir (IAS Retd) Executive Director of J&K Voluntary Health Association said that all public places in Budgam, Srinagar, Pulwama and Reasi Districts have been declared smoke free and efforts are on to make all public places in Baramulla District smoke free.
