‘Make hay while the sun shines !’ is a proverb, that has much relevance today .We must thank the unknown person who has pronounced this proverb, for the benefit of current usage as well as for the benefit of posterity as well. Whatever might be the intention of the proverb maker, the meaning that it conveys as we understand it today is we should make use of our chances or opportunites that come in our way or that knocks our door.After all life is short and in this competitive world the chances we get are very rare and once in a blue moon.Therefore, we should seize of the opportunities that come in our way with an iron grip and make use of it fully for achieving progress in our life.The proverb is very relevant in the case of businessmen and politicians.When we observe the biographies of world leaders who had come up in politics and changed the destiny of the world, had siezed of their opportunities that came in their way.Take the case of Abraham Lincoln, one of the outstanding US presidents.He had hailed from a humble beginning.But whenever chances came his way in politics he did not shy of them but seized them with a firm grip, despite of facing odds.Again racial discrimination and division of the nation on the basis of race was a thorn in its progress and US was waging an unprecedented civil war.President Lincoln took stock of the situation.Seized his opportunity.Saying that ‘a nation divided against itself cannot stand’,he issued the famous orders for the emancipation of slaves, that went down in history as one of the landmark achievements of President Lincoln.Similarly take the case of any achiver in any part of the world whether it was Mahatma, Nehru or Vallabai Patel, or Mrs.Indira Gandhi in the recent past, all of them utilised the opportunities that came in their way to its fullest extent..Had Mrs.Indira Gandhi did not involve herself for the cause of East Pakistan, Bangladesh would not have born.Therefore, all of us should get refreshed, by reading the proverb,’Make Hay While the Sun Shines!’and make use of the chances that come in our way to its fullest extent.After all life is short but precious and not to be wasted like anything !!
