Malawi civil servants, chiefs angry with Parliament

Civil servants and chiefs in Malawi are angry with their legislators because they have not approved the 2007/2008 budget in time to implement increases in their salaries.

In the budget ,cheifs have been given over 300 percent increament while civil servants have been given 20 percent.

Chiefs throughout the country are teaming up to force the Members of Parliament to pass the budget saying they have a hand in changing public opinion during elections for people to vote for them.

They have threatened the Members of Parliament that they would not be voted as legislators  in 2009 elections once they refuse to pass the budget.

The Malawi budget is usually approved in late June every year. The financial year starts in July.
