A city in Malaysia is barring Muslim women from wearing high heeled shoes and makeup to work. The law is allegedly meant to prevent incidents like rape and "illicit sex". Source: AFP
Kota Baru, a city in the northern state of Kelantan run by the Islamic party PAS, issued this directive concerning safety and dignity of Muslim women working in the food outlets and business houses.
The directive was distributed to all businesses in Kotabaru city.
The directive also mentioned if anybody like high heels, she could
wear it with rubber soles.
In addition to this, the directive states that Malaysian women must wear scarves covering their chest. This scarf may not be made from of transparent fabric.
Women are also ordered to wear full sleeves blouses, as well as socks.
The penalty for violating the new law is a fine of 500 ringgit or about $154 USD. According to the AFP, officials are denying the fine.
Interestingly, Kota Baru was allegedly the source of the highest concentration of internet users looking for pornography on Google in 2006. Source: The Star.
