West Bengal, a tiny state of India has been under the rule of Marxist lead Left Front for 34 years. It came to power in 1977 when vetern Marxist leader Jyoti Basu became the Chief Minister. Jyoti Basu was the longest serving Chief Minister in Indian history. Buddhadeb Bhattacharya was handed the Chief Minister’s post after Jyoti Basu relinquish the power. But Communist Party of India (Marxist)’s popularity has dwindled due to forceful acquisition of land for industrialization. The forthcoming 2011 Assembly Election are going to be a real acid test for the Left Front. Mamata Banerjee, the supremo of the main opposition party of Bengal, TMC is the real contender for Chief Minister’s post.In Bengal there are 32 districts.Total assembly constituencies: 294,electoral Rolls:5,60,91,973.
Mamata Banarjee-led TMC has reportedly reached a consensus with the Indian National Congress party.Mamata Banerjee had even set deadline for the Indian National Congress party (INC) to reach a seat sharing agreement. The INC had threatened that the party would alone contest the election in Bengal. The pre-poll alliance between the TMC and INC faced difficulties with even top leaders of INC failing to solve the differences. The TMC and Congress forge an alliance to defeat the Marxist led Left in West Bengal which has been ruling the state for the past 34 years. At last the INC the grand old party of India got 64 seats.TMC will contest the assembly election for the remaining 229 seats.
