Interpol states that Dominique Ntawukuriryayo has been tracked down and arrested in France. He was apprehended in Carcassonne which is a small town located in France. Ntawukuriryayo is wanted by the Rwanda tribunal for connection of the bloody genocide that occurred in the nation of Rwanda in 1994. The indictment states that Mtawukuriyayo coordinated the killing of over twenty-thousand Tutsis.
The killings took place near Gisagara near Kabuye Hill. The killings took place in April of 1994 over a period of just five days. Ntawukuriyayo isn’t the first fugitive wanted by the tribunal to be captured in France. Two other fugitives have been caught. Mr. Ntawukuriyayo is the third person wanted by the Rwanda tribunal to be captured in France.
Wenceslas Munyeshyaka and Laurent Bucyibaruta are the other two who were captured in France. They were captured and arrested earlier this year. But they haven’t been transferred to stand trial in front of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda as of yet. Munyeshyaka was a Catholic priest while Bucyibaruta was a former official for the government.
However, authorities in Paris have stated that the warrants were deemed “invalid.” They have already appealed to the courts in September. That case is to be revealed later in the year.
Interpol states that the arrest serves as a warning to other fugitives being hunted down by the ICTR. That implies that the other people responsible for the killings of thousands of Tutsis during that genocide cannot evade arrest and cannot evade justice.
So far, twenty-eight people have been convicted while five have been acquitted. The brutal massacre in 1994 took place in a little over three months as the lives of almost one-million people were claimed consisting of Tutsis and moderate Hutus.
It’s only a matter of time as other fugitives responsible for the genocide are tracked down.
