Man Utd vs Chelsea: Past Meetings

Manchester United and Chelsea clash at Old Trafford with vital points at stake in the Premier League title race.

Here, we look back at the last five meetings between the sides.

21/09/08 Premier League: CHELSEA 1 MANCHESTER UNITED 1

Honours were even as Chelsea extended their unbeaten home sequence to 85 games. Salomon Kalou found space in the United box to head the Blues level 10 minutes from time. Park Ji-Sung had given the Red Devils an 18th-minute lead when he turned in the rebound after Petr Cech had saved a Dimitar Berbatov effort.

21/05/08 Champions League final, Moscow: MANCHESTER UNITED 1 CHELSEA 1 (United win 6-5 on penalties)

An exciting encounter ended level after 120 minutes with Frank Lampard cancelling out a Cristiano Ronaldo header. Didier Drogba experienced the fine line between glory and ignominy when his 20-yard shot hit the crossbar with 13 minutes to go and then got himself sent off in extra time after a clash with Nemanja Vidic. Ronaldo, United’s star man all season, then looked like being the villain of the piece with a penalty miss in the shoot-out until John Terry slipped and missed his spot-kick, giving United a lifeline. Nicolas Anelka’s saved effort meant United were European champions for a third time.

26/04/08 Premier League: CHELSEA 2 MANCHESTER UNITED 1

Chelsea kept themselves in the title hunt with this victory in a pulsating clash at Stamford Bridge. Michael Ballack headed the Blues in front on the stroke of half-time but a dreadful pass from Ricardo Carvalho allowed Wayne Rooney to race clear and equalise. A draw seemed the likely outcome until Michael Carrick was adjudged to have blocked a Michael Essien cross with his arm, and Ballack tucked away the penalty. The match ended in unsavoury circumstances, with Patrice Evra getting involved in a scrap with a member of the Chelsea ground staff during the warm-down. The Football Association handed down punishment over the matter last month, banning the French full-back for four matches, but he returns for the visit of Chelsea.

23/09/07 MANCHESTER UNITED 2 CHELSEA 0

This game marked Avram Grant’s first in charge of Chelsea following the departure of Jose Mourinho, and United were always in charge once Carlos Tevez had scored just before half-time. Louis Saha added a late penalty to ensure United’s victory.

19/05/07 FA Cup final: CHELSEA 1 MANCHESTER UNITED 0

Chelsea edged a deeply forgettable FA Cup final, the first to be held at the new Wembley, when Didier Drogba worked a clever one-two with Frank Lampard before clipping the ball home in extra time.
