As the chaos in Zimbabwe continues to escalate, Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe had made it clear that he will do whatever means necessary to stay in power. Mugabe’s Zanu-PF mobs, militiamen, and youth, have went throughout the country to hunt down and execute supporters, activists, and members of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
Many have said that MDC leader and opposition candidate Morgan Tsvangirai had won the elections. However, he did not secure the majority to avoid a runoff election. The runoff is scheduled for June 27. Even if Tsvangirai won the runoff election, Mugabe said he would never cede power to him. Mugabe had threatened to plunge the country into civil war. Tsvangirai has already dropped out of the election.
Various figures across the world have given their condemnation of Mugabe. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown was one of the figures to give condemnation of Mugabe. So far, the British Ministry of Defense has contemplated about a possible military intervention in the country. But, that is easier said than done.
Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga called Zimbabwe an embarrassment to Africa. He demanded Mugabe to step down from power.
US presumed Democratic presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama of Illinois had also given forth his condemnation to Mugabe.
Nelson Mandela, the South African civil rights leader and former South African president, has given his criticism towards Mugabe. Mandela said that the leadership of Mugabe has been an utter failure. He added that it was sad to see Zimbabwe being plunged into violence and chaos.
Mandela spoke out against Mugabe at a London fundraiser. It was Mandela’s 90th birthday. He spoke out after hearing about Tsvangirai’s pull out from the elections. Also, Mandela is waiting for the United Nations to take action.
So far, the United Nations blames Mugabe’s supporters for most of the violence in the country. It is expected that Mandela’s words will carry much weight across the world. For the most part, Mandela’s criticism towards Mugabe speaks in volumes. However, Mugabe has yet to fire back at Mandela.
