Sake is on the main road towards Goma which is the regional capital. Currently, there are UN peacekeepers at Goma that will use force if attacked by General Nkunda’s men.
About over four-hundred thousand people have been uprooted this year; due to the fighting. According to BBC, the town of Sake is almost empty. Also according to BBC, the rebels are approaching Sake from the north. UN peacekeepers have set up their positions in the hills.
Major Prem Tiwari, a spokesman for this UN mission said that they won’t let this town fall to the hands of General Nkunda. The Human Rights Watch (HRW) has appealed to all sides to protect everybody caught in the fighting.
According to Martin Plaut, BBC Africa’s analyst, the Congolese offensive was planned many months ago.
Talks have been called forth by a spokesman for General Nkunda.
The reason for the rebellion stems due to General Nkunda’s claims of defending DR Congo’s Tutsi population from Hutu rebels from Rwanda. The rebels have lived in DR Congo since the genocide in Rwanda during 1994.
The government has warned him many times to stop the rebellion and reintegrate his men back into the army.
