The 15-minute film to be released on the Internet is called “Fitna.” According to Geert Wilders, a right-wing politician of the Netherlands said that the film talks about the ideals of the Muslim faith. Wilders said that this faith is the “enemy of freedom.”
However, it looks as if not many see it the same way as Wilders does.
Anger and outcry throughout the Muslim world was sparked. They say that this film will spark a witch hunt on Muslims.
The government has distanced itself from the views of Wilders in regards to Islam. But, they fear that the aftermath of the film’s release will mirror the violent protests in 2006 after the publication of Kurt Westergaard’s caricature of Muhammad with a bomb in his turban.
Currently, the original drawing is up for sale. It is possible that it will be auctioned online rather than at an actual auction house.
At least 1,000 have marched through the streets of The Netherlands’ capital of Amsterdam to protest the release of Wilder’s Fitna.
“We can no longer remain silent. There is a climate of hate and fear in the Netherlands,” said Rene Danen. Danen is the spokesman for the group Nederland Bekent Kleur, an anti-racism organization in the country. This organization was responsible for starting the protests.
Iran and Pakistan have condemned Fitna.
However, Wilders made a comment on Saturday.
“The film is not so much about Muslims as about the Koran and Islam. The Islamic ideology has as its utmost goal the destruction of what is most dear to us, our freedom,” Wilders wrote in the Dutch newspaper, “De Volkskrant.”
According to a friend of mine who lives in Holland, Fitna will probably not be released. He explains one reason is that many in Holland do not support the views of Geert Wilders. In addition, my friend has explained that Wilders is considered a racist.
He had further explained that Wilders himself is hated throughout Holland. In short, my friend in Holland had plenty to say about Wilders. But, he does not know whether Fitna will be released or not.
However, he says if it does, Holland can expect the same sort of outcry unleashed throughout Denmark.
In my friend’s words: "We do not support that racist."
