There are a lot of people who are Christians who are asked, "What does a person who is a Christian do to have fun and entertainment?" I’ve never read in God’s word that Christians cannot have fun and socialize…have you? God wants us to socialize, laugh, and to have fun but to follow the principles contained in His word. He wants us to enjoy socializing with people and spending our leisure time with friends, families, and co-workers.
Colossians 3:17 – the Bible says, "And whatsoever you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him." This verse instructs people to live a life by relaxing and having fun with our friends and families, playing games and socializing in activities that are pleasing to God’s word. We, as Christians, should remember to put God in the center of all of our activities and to rely on His word to guide us appropriately.
1 Corinthians 8:8 – the Bible says, "But meat commends us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse." Here’s where Paul addresses a variety of problems in the Corinthian’s beliefs and lifestyles. The Corinthian’s want clarity about some of their issues pertaining to their drinks, foods, and activities, and Paul offers up his advice for them to follow as Christians.
1 Corinthians 8:9 – the Bible instructs us, "But take heed should by any means this liberty of yours becomes a stumbling block to them that are weak." Paul continues by warning the people of Corinthian church not to get caught up in all the merriment, fun, gaiety and entertainment, forgetting about their actions; but to remember they should be pleasing activities to God. If we start to over enjoy ourselves by over indulging in wine, and becoming involved with other married men/women romantically, offering up wine to a person who is an alcoholic and continue to party too much; people will see them as being weak and this could cause a Christian to stumble in their faith too.
1 Corinthians 9:19-22 – the Bible tells us, "For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more. To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, which I might by all means save some." Here Paul is telling Christians they can try to win people to Christ by living according to the word of God. When people live as God’s word instructs, people see this and they win people to become a Christian. When Christian’s set a good example, it reaps souls for God; and a poor example, loses souls because the person/people who desire to win people to Christ are disobeying God’s word.
2 Corinthians 6:14-15 – The Bible instructs us, "Be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with righteousness? An what communion has light with darkness? And what concord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has he that believeth with an infidel?" Here Paul is instructing the people of Corinthians that God does not want us to put ourselves in a position where we’re being influenced by unbelievers, because when we do, we’re drawn into their schemes, foul languages, wicked plans, courting other women, sins and other wrongs. None of these are activities that are pleasing to God and we should not be influence by them either.
Paul is not telling the people they cannot dine with unbelievers but he is instructing us we should "not" become influenced and involved with their activities and schemes; because if we do, we’ll be lured into their wrongs. Christ associated with unbelievers too but He did not allow them to influence His way of life in any way. When Christians associate with both unbelievers and believers, we should be living as God expects us to live as Christians and that is by His word.
We cannot be Christians and continually keep in the constant company of unbelievers, because if we do, they will influence our every day thoughts and our ways of living. We should have the power to say "no" to anyone who is trying to sway us in the wrong direction. The flesh can be weak at time and it can cause us to become lax and lose communications with Christ and we’ll find ourselves being drawn back into the sins of the world. Christians we must walk by and in "faith" and be willing to withdraw from the wickedness of the earth and feel good as we walk away from sin too.
James 1:17 – the Bible tells us, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither show of turning." This verse tells us entertainment and fun is a gift from God, drawing Christians closer to Him and it gives Christians a reason to tell others about the many gifts God has to offer His people. We should "never" plan entertainment without first putting God right in the center of it all and we should not forget to thank Him for the gifts He provides us on a daily basis.
