The ‘Dabur Vatika Miss Nepal 2008’ beauty contest scheduled to be held on 7th August’08, had to be put on hold after the Maoist threatened to disrupt the show. The Maoist said they would not allow such ‘anti-women’ event sponsored by Capitalist and Feudalist elements of the country.
Amrita Thapa, the general secretary of All Nepal Women’s Organization (Revolutionary)- a satellite organization of the Maoists- has spearheaded the anti-pageant movement for months. In a statement in Kathmandu she said, “The beauty contests are organized by Multinational companies to expand their business interests. Since Nepal has now become a Federal Democratic Republic, we must stop such practices.”
The Nepal’s oldest and most prestigious beauty contest is sponsored by the Indian multinational, DABUR, through its Nepalese sister organization ‘Dabur Nepal.’ It carries a top prize of $1500 along with a kinetic scooter for the winner, $900 for first runners up and $600 for the second runners up.
