Marty's day of Brig Rajinder Singh MVC observed

Jammu, October 26(Scoop News)- To commemorate the 65th martyrdom day of Brig Rajinder Singh, MVC, the Saviour of Kashmir, the J&K Ex-Service League in collaboration with Academy of Art Culture and Languages, Jammu organised a function at Rajinder Singh Auditorium, University of Jammu here today.

Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu Prof. Mohan Paul Singh Ishar was the chief guest on the occasion.

President, Chamber of Commerce, Y.V. Sharma, President BAR, Association Jammu, B.S. Slathia, Lt. General Anup Singh Jamwal (Rtd), Brig R.S. langeh VSM, Director Rajya Sainik Board, Professor Anita Billawaria, Director Centre for History and Culture of Jammu & Ladakh Jammu University, Maj General( Rtd) Goverdhan Singh Jamwal, President J&K Service league, Joint Director of Information, Soujanya Sharma , Ex- Deputy Chief Minister, Pt. Mangat Ram Sharma besides other dignitaries paid homage to the martyr.

The daughter of Brig. Rajinder Singh, Urvashi Pathania and other members were also present on the occasion.

It is pertinent to mention here that on this day Brig Rajinder Singh Jamwal laid down his life at Buniyar (Uri) while fighting with Pak invaders. After the fall of Muzaffarbad on 22nd of October, 1947 he proceeded to deal with the Pak attack with 100 men and fought his first action at Garhi on 23rd October, 1947. Although, one platoon was lost in action at Garhi yet this gallant action provided enough time to Brig Rajinder Singh to demolish Uri Bridge on 24th October, 1947 to further delay the invaders for four days. His small force fought at Uri on 24th October, Mahura on 25th October, Rampur Buniyar on 26th October till his force was ambushed at Buniyar while withdrawing on intervening night of 26-27 October to defend Kashmir enabling Maharaja Hari Singh to complete the accession formalities and arrival of the Indian Army on 27th October, 1947.

The Brigadier was posthumously decorated with the highest gallantry award Maha Vir Chakra and became the first recipient of this award in Independent India.

Brig Rajinder Singh hailed from a small village Bagoona (now renamed as Rajindera Pura) of Tehsil Samba 30 Kms East of Jammu. After schooling in his village he graduated from the Prince of Wales College (Now Gandhi Memorial Science College) in 1921. He was commissioned in the J&K State force in June, 1921. He became Brig in May 1942 commanded Jammu Brigade, Kashmir Brigade and took over as Chief of staff J&K State Force from Maj General H.L. Scot on 24th September,1947.
