Mary Ellen Ryder, a linguistics professor at Boise State University, is missing and believed to be dead after a grass fire destroyed nine homes in southeast Boise on Sunday night.
Mary Ellen Ryder was a well-liked teacher who was entering her 20th year as a member of the Boise State Faculty. The fire that claimed her life was spurred by strong winds and turned nine homes into nothing more than ash. Nine other homes were damaged and 50 people were evacuated.
Students and faculty at Boise State are expressing their sorrow about the loss of one of their own. One of her students, Brad Kelly, said, "She took a subject that was boring and dull to some students and made it interesting and exciting." The University expressed its condolences to the families of Mary Ellen Ryder and her husband Peter in an official statement.
