Math for Moms and Dads – First Anniversary

Stevens-Henager College announced today the one-year anniversary of its “Bridging the Gap: Elementary Math & Algebra 4 Moms and Dads” class. The class provides parents the tips and tools they need in order to better help their children with their math homework. Over 70 parents throughout the Idaho have “graduated” from the class.

The three-part class is structured to follow the Idaho state standards for math education. In addition to covering math basics, the class also teaches parents about different learning styles, and how to adapt individual parenting styles to provide the most effective help for students. Classes are held at the Stevens-Henager College locations in Boise, Idaho Falls, Mountain Home, Nampa, and other locations throughout the state at no cost to the community.

“We created the ‘Math for Moms and Dads’ class last year because we saw the effects of the statewide budget cuts in K–12 classrooms. Many of those cuts resulted in the loss of teachers’ aides, which led to more parents volunteering in the classroom and being the primary tutor for students,” said Shane Reeder, regional director at Stevens-Henager College Idaho. “The class was intended to be a one-time refresher for parents who were going into classrooms to volunteer, but the first one was so popular that we extended it to a two- or three-day workshop!”

New “Math 4 Moms and Dads” classes will be offered in 2012. Interested parents can call 208-383-4540, ext. 1875 for more information.
