The country of Finland was rocked by the second deadly school scooting in the past year yesterday when a man identified by police as 22 year-old Matti Juhani Saari shot nine classmates and faculty to death before killing himself at a Finish college.
Matti Juhani Saari had been questioned by police only one day before his rampage for posting disturbing, violent videos on YouTube, but he was not breaking any laws and was not arrested.
Witnesses say that Saari entered a classroom at around 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday in the Kauhajoki School of Hospitality in the remote western town of Kauhajoki and began shooting while students were taking a test. He killed eight students and one teacher inside of that classroom and one more in a nearby hallway. He then set the bodies on fire and shot himself in the head. Only one of the bodies has been identified because the rest were burned beyond recognition.
This school shooting is the second to occur in Finland in less than a year. In November, 2007, an 18-year-old student killed nine people and himself at Jokela High School. The story is strikingly similar to that of Matti Juhani Saari because the shooter posted violent YouTube videos before the attack.
Authorities found notes in Saari’s dormitory room yesterday that revealed his violent, deranged tendencies: "I hate the human race," he wrote. "I hate mankind, I hate the whole world and I want to kill as many people as possible."
Finland has been debating how to tighten their loose gun laws since the 2007 Jokela shooting and those talks are expected to increase. With a lively hunting culture, Finland has relaxed gun laws and a high rate of gun ownership. After recent events, many are calling for a complete reevaluation of the country’s gun laws.
