GOP hopeful Mitt Romney made harsh comments about his fellow GOP hopeful, John McCain about having ties with 2004 Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry. In response at a discussion about security issues, John McCain too had harsh words to say about Mitt Romney.
As Romney went after McCain’s record in the Senate, McCain went after Romney’s record as Governor of Massachusetts. McCain had called Mitt Romney a flip-flopper and fired at Romney’s statewide healthcare plan in Massachusetts. He claimed that it was not a conservative effort.
“One thing I think we should really give Governor Romney credit for; he is consistent. He has consistently taken both sides of any major issue. He has consistently flip-flopped on every issue… He’s consistent that he’s flip flopped on every single major issue,” McCain had said at the discussion while using reform on campaign finance and immigration as examples.
The “L” word or “liberal” has been thrown around back and forth between Mitt Romney and John McCain. Both GOP contenders have branded each other as liberals.
“As the liberal governor of the state of Massachusetts he raised taxes by $730 million… The state of Massachusetts is now saddled with a quarter billion dollar debt over his government mandated healthcare system,” McCain added in his attack against Romney.
McCain did not stop. He continued to attack and challenge Romney’s record as governor. McCain would also attack Romney’s record on the state economy.
“When he was governor they had the third or fourth worst economy of any state in America. Manufacturing jobs left this country at 7%, they left Massachusetts at 14%,” McCain said.
McCain also attacked Romney’s private sector experience.
McCain on the attack of Romney’s private sector experience said: “As the head of his investment, quote, company. He presided over the acquisition of companies that immediately laid off thousands of workers. So, I appreciate the fact that Governor Romney has been entirely consistent. He has consistently taken at least two sides of every issue, sometimes more than two. Congratulations.”
Finishing up his press conference, McCain said as he insisted: “Everything I said today is backed up by the facts as a matter of record.”
