While the presumptive GOP nominee John McCain has called Democratic co-frontrunner Barack Obama patriotic, he said that Obama’s relationship and ties with William Ayers brings up many questions. William Ayers is the founder of the Weather Underground, which is a radical and violent leftist organization that was formed in 1969.
In 1970, the group issued a “Declaration of State War” against the United States government. The group is notorious for committing various acts of violence for its cause. In short, the Weather Underground is classified as a radical left group that had been founded by college students.
During in an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” McCain brought up the issue.
“He became friends with him and spent time with him while the guy was unrepentant over his activities as a member of a terrorist organization, the Weathermen,” McCain had explained. This is in regards to the question from George Stephanopoulos, who was one of the mediators of the Democratic debate in Pennsylvania.
In short, McCain had found extra ammunition to use against Obama. At the same time, this ammunition has also come into the hands of Democratic co-frontrunner Senator Hillary Clinton of New York. Clinton and Obama are still fighting it out for the Democratic nomination.
Clinton said that Obama’s ties with Ayers were part of a number of concerns in preparation for the general elections.
McCain had found an open opportunity to bring up something such as Obama’s ties with Ayers. On April 22, the Pennsylvania Democratic primaries are to take place. Pennsylvania has been deemed one of the major contests in the Democratic race.
However, there could possibly be two main issues that could affect the Democratic primary. The obvious hot button issue will be guns. Guns will be a double-edged sword issue that will help or hurt Clinton and/or Obama.
In Pennsylvania, there are almost one million registered hunters. The state has a quarter of a million people that are registered with the NRA.
On the other side, there is the issue of gun-related murders. Philadelphia has the nickname of “Killadelphia” due to the city having at least one gun-related murder each day.
However, a possible underlying topic will be “green jobs.” The Democratic primary contests take place on April 22. On April 22, it is Earth Day.
