Steve McClaren’s contract as England’s head coach was terminated this morning after his side failed to qualify for the European Championships in 2008. McClaren’s were two-nil down after 12 minutes following some frightful goalkeeping by Scott Carson on his competitive debut, and suspect defending by a second string back four.
In somewhat trecherous condition at Wembley, Scott carson fumbled a Nico Kranjcar’s 30-year shot, then a few minutes later Ivica Olic lost his marker and rounded a second shot past the ailing keeper.
With David Beckham’s appearance after the break, England managed to level the game at 2-2. A Frank Lampard penalty, courtesy of a dubious shirt tug on Jermaine Defoe, and a Peter Crouch volley from Beckham’s cross put England within touching distance of the championships.
However England capitulated in the final 15 minutes and conceded a third to Mladen Petric from 25 yards.
The result, coupled with Russia’s 1-0 victory in Andorra, cost Steve McClaren and his assistant, Terry venables, their jobs. McClaren gambled on his team selection by dropping regular keeper Paul Robinson and former captain David Beckham, the latter of which won his 99th cap.
Once again, here are the web experts of football who either blame foreigners/can’t spell/suggest a variety of unlawful acts/take football too seriously/or don’t actually watch football.
"Sack McClaren and replace him with who? Too many foreigners have ruined our football, haven’t got any decent english managers now as they are mostly foreign. What now? Another foreign manager for the England job I suppose. It gets worse, something has to be done, although I think it’s too late. RIP English football."

"I’m so depressed. How could they let this happen to us?"

Time for the FA to get a grip of these stupidly overpaid underperformers. Here is what needs to happen to sort the beautiful game out
1. FA to introduce underperforming fines to Enland players, these should be
big fines like their big wages, 10% of all annual earnings including club salary
for first offence, 15% for the second.
2. Stop selecting the same old players such as Lamphard, Rooney, Beckham, Terry and Gerrad, these players are simply not consistent. Instead start looking outside the premiership to other leagues where there is young hungry talent ready to perform.
3. FA should fine any Premiership club or even ban them from the league if they don’t release a player for England without good cause.
4. Make the players hungry again, restrict the salaries they can earn in the premiership until they have achieved so many caps for England
5. True Fans should now send a clear signal to cut footballers wages by cancelling their sky sports subscription for 12 months.

"Notice that the Arsenal fans dont wanna blame the number of foreign players in the premiership for our national teams decline. I wonder why that is. I understand why teams buy foreign players because they are generally cheaper than there english counterparts. But the FA has got to take a stand and reduce the number of foreign players. The fact that there are more foreign players in the premiership than british players is a disgrace.
On the other side of the coin, however, in the football league the number of british players is probably about 90% at least. That’s why watching the football league is so much better than the premiership. Soon it will be the case where only the 3 teams coming up from the championship will have british players. The FA have got to act now and stuff EU law, just act."
