Betty McCollum decision to support precision airstrikes in Iraq must have been difficult for her personally! She hates war! Ultimately she decided in favor of it to prevent “atrocities” from being committed by ISIS terrorists against vulnerable civilian populations in Iraq, including women and children – tens of thousands of them!
On August 8, 2014 Congresswoman Betty McCollum of Minnesota issued a press release statement concerning President Obama decision to authorize targeted military airstrikes against the IslamicState of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) to protect American officials in northern Iraq, as well as Kurds, Christians, and Yazidis, a religious minority under siege by ISIS.
The President also authorized ahumanitarian mission to airdrop food and water for the Yazidis, which beganyesterday.
Her statement read as follows:
“President Obama is appropriately exercising his authority to prevent atrocities from being committed against innocent civilians in Iraq,” Congresswoman McCollum said.
“Limited military strikes and emergencyhumanitarian aid are essential to saving lives and deterring the serious threat posed by ISIS. The men and women of the Armed Forces have my full support as they seek to save civilian lives in Iraq.” End Statement
Note: Congresswoman Betty McCollum serves on the House Appropriations Committee.
It should be noted that Rep. McCollum is highly respected within the Congress and her decision to support military action in Iraq, particularly in defense of vulnerable populations, including women and children is reflective of her unquestioning stand against terrorism since before 9-11-2001.
With that being said McCollum is clearly against the very idea of war – except in self defense or defense of others!
This decision on her part couldn’t have been easy, as I am sure she weighed her decision to support these airstrikes very carefully before issuing out this statement.
McCollum is serving her seventh term in the United States Congress, representing the familiesof Minnesota’s Fourth District. She is highly regarded by her colleagues, across the political divide, in both the House and the Senate.
In 2000, Congresswoman McCollum made history as only the second Minnesota woman elected to serve in Congress since statehood in 1858. In the U.S. House of Representatives, she serves the residents of Minnesota’s capital city, St. Paul, as well as Ramsey County andWashington County.
