In preparation of the run-off election in Zimbabwe which is set for June 27, opposition candidate Morgan Tsvangirai and his Movement for Democratic Chance (MDC) Party has defied the will of President Robert Mugabe of the Zanu-PF Party. In the parliamentary elections, the MDC had taken power as it crushed the influence of Mugabe and other Zanu-PF members.
The MDC continues to defy Mugabe. Also, the MDC had given its own State of the Nation address. Tsvangirai said that the country would undergo a new change of government. The members and supporters of Tsvangirai and the MDC gathered at the Harare International Conference Center. They had a moment of silence for those that were killed in the violence after the March elections.
Zimbabwe’s situation had mirrored that of Kenya after the elections on December 27, 2007. However, it is highly unlikely that a power-sharing agreement will be in Zimbabwe.
Top US diplomat to Africa, Jendayi Frazer, said that Tsvangirai had won the elections. She accused Mugabe and his administration of trying to withhold the results and trying to steal the elections. Frazer had even called for UN sanctions against Zimbabwe.
Tsvangirai won; but, not enough to avoid a run-off election.
Mugabe and his supporters have accused Tsvangirai of being a puppet of the Western nations. He has accused the Western nations of conspiring to overthrow him and take control of the country. However, Mugabe has been blamed for the failing economy and high rate of inflation.
Mugabe has blamed the MDC for the violence. However, human rights groups and the UN has blamed Mugabe’s Zanu-PF Party for most of the violence.
