Meditation in Quran

“Meditate (on God) day and night. Quran 19:11

Many people may be surprised to know that the Quran (“Recital”) mentions “meditation” within it’s sacred pages.

Meditation is a practice in which an individual “trains the mind or induces a mode of consciousness.”  Meditation has been “practiced since antiquity” as a component of numerous religious traditions and beliefs, according to Wikipedia.

The Quran advocates (among other things) that believers should meditate day and night (Quran 3:41).

“Meditate (on God) day and night”. Quran 19:11

Especially at night (Quran 17:79).

Night or night time  is the period of time between the sunset and the sunrise when the Sun is below the horizon. The phenomenon of day and night is due to the rotation of a celestial body about its axis. It is saiid that the Quran itself was revealed during the “Night of power.” In Arabic, Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Power) is described in the Qur’an as, “better than a thousand months” (Sura 97:3).

The whole Night of Power, from sunset to dawn, is the holiest “night” of the year, according to Muslim scholars. Muslims are encouraged to pray that night (see video: Muslims celebrate the Night of Power http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAhMDuTt4g4).

That the focus of mediation should be squarely centered on God (Quran 25: 64) and His name (Quran 50:40).

You should also meditate on the verses of Quran (see video: Quran meditation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5dB-HpiqeA).

What is particularly  fascinating to me  is that the Quran also recommends mediation, as a type of “formulary” (or technique) to elevate you “to an honorable rank” (Quran 17:79) or in another translation “to raise you in rank” in the Hereafter. The implications of such a statement are absolutely fascinating to contemplate (or meditate).
