German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party suffered major losses in a state election Sunday after a senior ally’s divisive campaign, and a strong performance by a new left-wing party left it unclear who would govern the western region.
Official results from Hesse showed that Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union, under governor Roland Koch, slumped from a majority in the state legislature to finish only marginally ahead of the center-left Social Democrats, with the same number of seats.
