The Mexican Federal Police has made it clear, they need better weapons in order to go up against the drug gangs that continue to war with each other. Right now, the Mexican Federal Police and the Mexican Army are into their eighteenth month of a joint effort to fight against the country’s powerful and influential drug cartels.
According to police officers, they only have pistols to use to fight against those in the drug cartels. According to General Rodolfo Cruz, the Mexican Federal Police needs serious firepower in the form of machine guns. Cruz said that the pistols alone do nothing against the drug cartels.
Recently, a 200-strong unit was sent to Culiacan as reinforcements to maintain security after seven officers were killed. Over the weekend, the police of the Mexican border down of Ciudad Juarez was put on high alert after receiving an anonymous e-mail. The e-mail said that gunmen will open fire at various public outings throughout the town.
Many cities in northern Mexico near the border of the United States have had their fair share of drug violence. This has happened only within the first few months of 2008. The police and military are caught in the crossfire by the warring cartels that war with each other for control of the illegal trade routes to the United States.
To make matters worse, the cartels have better forces than the Mexican Police and Mexican Army combined. While the police and soldiers use pistols and rifles, the hitmen of the cartel are devastating firepower. There have been reports of drug gangs getting their hands on US weapons in the past.
In short, the government forces are outgunned against the cartels.
