Proving that digital activism can produce real-world results, a text message campaign propagated largely over Twitter has raised significant funding for earthquake relief in Haiti.
A text message campaign launched by the American Red Cross to raise money for disaster relief in Haiti has raised over $1,000,000 in less than 24 hours, according to a message on Twitter by State Department staff member Jared Cohen.
The campaign, endorsed by the State Department was propogated through social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.
Cohen, who is part of Secretary Clinton’s Policy Planning team, wrote that, "Text "Haiti" to 90999 has just reached $1,020,000 in less than 24hours." He added, "I bet we can reach $1.5 million before the west coast goes to sleep."
