In Rock Hill, South Carolina, US Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee spoke to supporters about his leadership and experience outside of the Beltway. Huckabee was the Republican victor in the Iowa caucuses but trailed in third in both the New Hampshire and Michigan primaries.
“A lot of people have been in Washington a while,” Huckabee said. He added: “The question is, if they haven’t gotten it done now, what makes us think they’ll get it done when they get another chance?”
In his speech, Huckabee emphasized a lot on leadership. He said: “We need leadership that actually has been able to be effective. As a governor for 10 ½ years in my state, I wouldn’t have been continually reelected if I hadn’t been able to get the job done.”
When Huckabee started out his speech, he went into his list of his achievements as governor of Arkansas. Achievements include the improvement of education, improvement of roads, and creating jobs.
In regards to leadership, Huckabee said: “I’m not telling all of that just to pat myself on my back. I want you to understand that its important that you elect somebody president who understands the job is not just making a few speeches, serving on a few committees, making a few trips overseas – it’s sitting at that desk everyday and saying what are we going to do to improve life for the next generation of Americans.”
Huckabee also decided to take a jab of John McCain who is the only frontrunner in the GOP race with actual experience in Capitol Hill. In taking a jab at McCain, Huckabee said that DC’s leadership is has failed.
“We’re in trouble now because people sitting in Washington had a long time to fix someone of these problems and they have not done it. I don’t have any confidence that suddenly, they’re going to light up like a bulb and figure it out after years and years of not getting it done.”
Also in South Carolina is fellow GOP candidate Fred Thompson who is a former senator and former actor who is known for his role as district attorney Arthur Branch on “Law and Order.” Thompson has been campaigning in preparation for the South Carolina primaries this Saturday.
