KABUL (Pajhwok Afghan News): A group of militants entered a building of Pashtani Trade Bank and started firing at police in the Seraji area of Kabul, two kilometers away from the presidential palace, on Wednesday morning.
The fight, launched on Afghanistan’s Independence Day and the day before presidential and provincial council elections, is ongoing.
Eyewitnesses said that the clash started at 6 am. People said they heard the sounds of explosions and guns firing and that the area was surrounded by security forces.
The number of casualties caused to civilians, security forces and militants has been not been clarified yet.
Police crime branch chief in Kabul, Abdul Ghafar Syedzadah, told Pajhwok Afghan News the resistance of militants was nearly over in the area and the militants were close to defeat.
Salahuddin Ayubi, a subcommander of Jalaluddin Haqqani, claimed responsibility for the attack, adding that two police vehicles were destroyed in the attack.
About two years ago, the militants attacked during a celebration ceremony of Mujahiddin Independence Day from the area.
Since last week a rocket attack, two suicide attacks and the armed attack occurred in Kabul. (Detailed story to follow)
