A nuclear physics professor, along with two other men, was released from an attempted abduction by militants in Kohat on Thursday. The militant commander of the abductors was killed in the encounter with Kohat police.
According to CID sources, Dr. Fida Younus, Chairman of the Physics Department of Kohat University (KUST), along with his brother Maqbool, Manager of the Khushal Bank of Kohat and Medical Representative Hayatullah were headed towards his office in a chauffeur driven car when they were intercepted by militants on Thursday morning.
His chauffeur Farooq escaped while Dr. Younus, Maqbool and Hayatullah were abducted by militants. His driver Farooq immediately alerted the Kohat police department, and informed the police about the abduction. After a brief chase, the Kohat police intercepted the abductors near Dhoda village of Kohat, and during the encounter with the police, the militant commander and head of the gang of abductors Abdul Wadood of Baitullah Mehsood group was killed. An accomplice was arrested.
According to DIG, the Kohat abduction of physics professor Dr. Fida Younus was an effort of militants to learn more about nuclear technology.
