Kabul: A New York Times reporter along with his Afghan interpreter and another companion has been abducted by the militants in central Afghanistan.
Director of the Department of Information and Culture of Logar province, Mohammad Zahir Siddiqui, confirmed the reporter was abducted from the Sarkh district of the province, some 65 kilometers south of Kabul.
He could not tell the abducted reporter’s name but said his interpreter’s name is Mohammad Tahir.
But a security official said his name was David Rohde, and he was interviewing the Taliban leaders in the area.
Another official of the province, who does not want his name mentioned, blamed the reporter ‘visiting the Taliban-controlled districts without informing the security forces.’
A Canadian journalist, Mellissa Fung, was kidnapped in another nearby province, Maidan Wardak, a month ago but the National Security was later able to free her from the Taliban.
The Taliban have not yet taken responsibility of the kidnapping of the New York Times reporter.
