The racial divide was sharp and apparent according to the exit polls conducted for the Mississippi primary. While it is projected that United States Democratic co-frontrunner Barack Obama will be the winner in the Mississippi primary, there was a very large racial divide between himself and Democratic co-frontrunner Hillary Clinton.
However, it has not been uncommon in most of the primary contests and caucuses where Barack Obama has gotten major support from the African-American voting bloc. African-Americans and other blacks are considered to be the key bloc or voting base of the Democratic Party. But, Obama has appealed to white voters and voters of different ethnicities as well.
Obama has managed to split two of Clinton’s key voting blocs: Hispanic voters and women voters.
But, Mississippi has shown an interesting case. In terms of the African-American voters in Mississippi, most of them picked Obama. Obama had received ninety-one percent of the African-American votes, while Clinton only received nine.
In the case of the white voters, Clinton had received seventy-two percent while Obama received twenty-one percent. It is also reported that this is the same case in both Alabama and Arkansas. These are the three states that have been racially polarized.
Recently, key Clinton ally and fundraiser, Geraldine Ferraro, a former New York Representative made a comment about Obama and his race. It has drawn fire from both the Clinton and Obama campaigns.
