Win and you are in! Game five in New York, the Yankees taking on the Detroit Tigers in the fifth and final game with the series tied at two wins each.
The Tigers started the first inning by scoring two runs, both solo homers. Don Kelly hit one and Delmon Young had the other, both off of Yankee starter Ivan Nova.
Nova was pulled after two innings, allowing the two runs on three hits with three K’s. He was relieved by Phil Hughes who went 1.1 inning, no runs allowed, gave up two hits and had two K’s. Next was Boone Logan, 0.2 inning no runs, one hit and one strikeout. The next pitcher was CC Sabathia, 1.1 innings, allowed one run on two hits, two walks and four K’s. Next was Rafael Soriano, 1.2 innings no runs and two K’s. David Robertson started the eight for the Yankees, the sixth Yankee pitcher, he retired the side in order. The ninth inning belonged to Mariano Rivera, three up for Detroit, three down, on five total pitches.
Detroit started Doug Fister. Fister allowed one run on five hits, two walks and four K’s. Max Scherzer came in the game in the sixth innings in relief and gave up one run on two hits with two K’s. Joaquin Benoit was next for Detroit, 1.2 innings no runs, one walk, three hits and three K’s. In the bottom of the ninth with Detroit up 3-2 Jose Valverde came in to try to collect another save. It took eleven pitches to set down the side, get his save, preserve the win for Fister and win the series for Detroit.
Mission accomplished, congratulations to the Detroit Tigers as they win 3-2 and advance to the ALCS.
