SATURDAY QUICK HITS
Ugly weather for baseball in some parts of the East as Washington and Philly postponed their games but the Yankees played anyway and won.
A brutal day in the Bronx, rain windy and cold. Freddy Garcia(1-0) pitched for the Yankees and went six innings giving up just two hits and no runs. Mariano Rivera pitched the final inning gave up one hit and gets the save, number six on the season.
The Yankee offense came from Mark Teixeira who was two for three, hit his fifth home run and three RBI. Robinson Cano also had two RBI and nailed his third home run.
Texas Ranger Derek Holland gets the loss and is now 2-1 on the year. Texas is now 10-4 and the Yankees 8-5.
The Kansas City Royals reached the ten win mark by defeating the Seattle Mariners 7-0. The Royals record is 10-4. Sean O’Sullivan started for the Royals and with the win evened his record at 1-1. Sean pitched five scoreless innings striking out four and giving up five hits. Alex Gordon batting .373 had three hits with two RBI. He has twenty two hits and is on a ten game hitting streak. The streak is the longest active in the majors this year. Seattle drops to 4-11. Felix Hernandez(1-2) gets the loss.
Josh Beckett(2-1) put a stop to the Red Sox losing streak pitching seven strong innings to beat Toronto 4-1. Beckett gave up one run on three hits and struck out nine batters. Jonathan Papelbon recorded his second save pitching one inning allowing one hit and striking out one. The Red Sox offense did just enough in the win getting nine hits with a home run from Jed Lowrie, he was three for five with two RBI. Boston’s record is 3-10 and Toronto is .500 at 7-7.
The Baltimore Orioles are in a free fall losing their sixth straight game to the Cleveland Indians 8-3. The Orioles started the season 4-0 but have lost seven of their last nine games.
Cleveland had thirteen hits including two home runs and three doubles in their eight run attack. Shin-Soo Choo(2) and Orlando Cabrera(2) homered for the Indians. Cabrera was two for four with four RBI. Josh Tomlin(3-0) allowed two runs on six hits in six innings for the win. Oriole pitcher Jeremy Guthrie was the losing pitcher and is now 1-2.
Tampa Bay is making their record easier to look at as they are now 6-8 after a home win over the Twins. The final score was 4-3 as they tied it in the ninth with solo home run from Ben Zobrist and a walk-off run scoring single by Johnny Damon. Damon the DH for the Ray’s had a walk-off two run home run on Thursday also.
Juan Cruz got his first win for Tampa Bay pitching one inning of relief. The Rays have now won five in a row for that better looking 6-8 record. The Twins are now 4-10 on the season. Jason Kubel homered for the Twins and it was just the fourth home run hit for the Twins this season.
