Ryan Howard is now tied for second on the Phillies career home run list after hitting two to help defeat the Mets 10-3. Howard’s home run total is now 259, tied with Del Innis. Howard is now looking at Mike Schmidt’s franchise record of 548 home runs.
Ryan nailed his first of the night in the fourth, a 427 foot blast with one on. His second shot came in the sixth with the bases loaded as he hit his tenth career grand slam. The two home runs for six RBI take his total to twenty seven for the year, he now has six home runs this year.
Vance Worley (1-0) started for the Phillies went a strong six allowing no runs on two hits. Worley was brought up to replace Joe Blanton who went on the fifteen day disabled list. This was his second major league win in three starts.
The Phillies scored ten runs on ten hits as Placido Polanco and Ben Francisco each had two RBI along with Howard’s six.
Met’s starter Mike Pelfrey (1-3) takes the loss, he lasted 4.1 innings giving up four runs on eight hits struck out three and walked one.
The New York Mets record is now 11-15 and the Phillies are 17-8 in their first twenty five games.
L.A. Dodger Andre Ethier was looking to extend his hitting streak to twenty five games and came through with a double in the fifth inning. Ethier holds the major league record for the longest April hitting streak.
The Dodgers beat the Padres 3-2. The Padres have lost seven of their last eight games and drop to 9-17. The Dodgers are now a game over .500 at 14-13.
Clayton Richard (1-2) started for the Padres and allowed two runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings in his second loss. The Padre offense managed two runs on eight hits.
Ted Lilly (2-2) started for L.A. and pitched a solid six innings giving up one run on five hits. Jonathan Broxton got his sixth save. Aaron Miles was three for four and Matt Kemp (6) and Juan Uribe (3) each homered for the Dodgers.
